Cape Town witnessed a feat of extraordinary strength and symbolism last Wednesday as world-renowned strongman Franz “Austrian Rock” Müllner pulled a 14,5-ton double-decker bus across 20 metres in just 57 seconds. He smashed his 60th official world record in front of the iconic Long March to Freedom monument in what is now known as the world record bus pull.

Set against the powerful backdrop of Nelson Mandela’s image at Century City, the moment was more than a test of muscle. It was a message to the world, highlighting the significance of the world record bus pull.

With the themes of hope and freedom at its core, Müllner’s challenge marked the African leg of his epic “7 World Records on 7 Continents” mission. This brought his global tally to six continents and counting.

A global journey of strength

Müllner’s journey began in Ollantaytambo, Peru, an ancient Incan town in South America, where he completed his first challenge.

From there, he continued to:

  • Europe – performing a record-setting feat in the Netherlands,
  • North America – in San Diego, USA,
  • Australia – in Brisbane,
  • Asia – with a record event in Turkey.

Each challenge has pushed the limits of what is physically and mentally possible. Müllner’s previous world records include pulling three trucks in succession, towing a truck with a helicopter landing on it. He also set records for arm-wrestling a 75-ton ship and moving a 1 400-ton vessel.

These feats have not only earned him international acclaim. They underscore his mission to inspire resilience and hope through physical achievement, especially with notable events like the world record bus pull.

Franz Müllner
World-renowned strongman and former special forces soldier Franz Müllner, made headlines on Wednesday as he pulled one of City Sightseeing Cape Town’s iconic red double-decker buses during the remarkable Long March to Freedom event in Century City.

From special forces to global icon

Müllner is not just an athlete; he’s a former Jagdkommando soldier in Austria’s elite Special Operations Forces.

He credits his extraordinary endurance and mental discipline to his military training. He says it taught him to overcome limits and stay focused under pressure.

“This is more than just about records,” said Müllner.

“It’s about showing people that no matter where you come from you can break barriers, both physically and mentally. My message is hope. My message is freedom.”

With his 60th record now secured, Müllner holds the title of the athlete with the most official world records in the world, including his world record bus pull.

Cape Town shines on the global stage

City Sightseeing Cape Town, whose iconic red bus was used for the event, celebrated Müllner’s achievement. “We’re honoured to have supported this historic moment. Franz’s strength, spirit, and message reflect the very heart of Cape Town,” they stated.

The event was made possible with the support of The Long March to Freedom and Century City, proud co-hosts of the unforgettable occasion.

With just Antarctica left on his global mission, Müllner showed no signs of slowing down. But before heading south, he had one final promise: “I’ll be back in beautiful Cape Town,” he said, “because this city has soul.” The world record bus pull was just one of the highlights of his journey.
