SAPS nab three SASSA officials

Three SASSA officials were apprehended by SAPS as the Johannesburg Local Office was about to start its operations following a tip-off.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) confirmed that three officials suspected of fraudulent activities were arrested on Friday, March 14, at its Johannesburg Local Office.

In a media statement, SASSA Spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi, said, “Two males and one female were apprehended by the SAPS as the office was about to start its operations following a tip-off. SASSA is working closely with SAPS, and more arrests are expected.”

He added that this was part of an ongoing work by the agency to mitigate fraud and corrupt activities in all SASSA offices across the country, which was directed by Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Tolashe.

“The arrests in the Johannesburg Local Office come after similar arrests were made in an office in Idutywa, Eastern Cape, recently,” he added.

“SASSA will not rest until all the bad apples currently in the system are removed, ensuring an efficient and dignified organisation that will serve its beneficiaries with integrity.”

Additionally, SASSA appeals to and encourages members of the public to work together with the agency and report grant fraud or corruption to 0800 60 10 11 or the National Anti-Corruption Hotline at 0800 701 701.
