A taxi strike in Kariega has brought widespread disruption to the area today, affecting traffic, municipal operations, and public safety. The strike, led by the UD Taxi Association (UDTA), highlights grievances over the delayed repair of a key bridge and intensified tensions with police intervention.
Meeting Breakdown and Police Intervention
Mayor Babalwa Lobishe met with the UDTA to address their concerns. The meeting was disrupted and collapsed after reports that police shot teargas at some taxis near Matanzima Cemetery and allegedly threatened to shoot drivers who refused to remove their vehicles.
UDTA spokesperson Lubabalo Vesele said, “We are here to focus on the bridge not being fixed. We want the contractor to be appointed today and to visit the site today so that we can be satisfied. That is the only way the protest will stop.”
The meeting is expected to restart as efforts to resolve the escalating situation continue.
Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions
The strike has caused major disruptions across Kariega, with several intersections and roads affected. The following areas have been reported as hotspots:
- Intersections:
- Algoa Road / Mel Brooks Avenue
- Matanzima Road / Nomakhwezana Street
- Rocklands Road / Bantom Extension Road
- Rocklands Road / Matanzima Road
- Union Avenue / Marcony Street
- Roads:
- Maduna Road
- Kiva Street
- Makhanda Street
- Langa Crescent
- 14th Avenue
Authorities advise motorists to avoid these areas and use alternative routes to ensure safety.
Closure of Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC)
The ongoing strike has also led to the closure of Kariega’s Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC). Learner’s licences, driver’s tests, and other appointments will be postponed. Online licence renewals and Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) applications must now be completed within seven days.
With heightened tensions and significant disruptions, Kariega residents and commuters are urged to exercise caution. Updates on the strike and negotiations between the UDTA and the municipality will follow as this situation unfolds.
