Evans (58) is charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Vanessa Van Rensburg (36), in his Oyster Bay holiday home during the Easter weekend. Van Rensburg, a Gqeberha mother of two, was also one of Evans’s employees.

During court proceedings so far today in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court, Evans firmly stated that he would not plead guilty. In his statement supporting his bail application, Evans claimed he is the sole provider for his family, including his wife and three daughters, who rely on him both financially and emotionally.

He also emphasised his critical role in running Algoa Plastics, a business based in Gqeberha, arguing that his continued involvement is essential not only for his employees but for the broader economic situation in Gqeberha.

Proceedings were adjourned after Evans broke down in tears while reading his statement for bail to the court.

Netwerk24 reports that family members of Van Rensburg attended today’s proceedings. Her father brought a little wooden casket with her ashes to court.

The state also submitted a new charge sheet to court on Friday, where charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and obstruction of justice were added to the murder charge.
